| Absorbents
are used frequently to clean up repair shop spills. Absorbent material
can be granular (kitty litter type) or a reusable foam variety. Absorbent
foam pads can be used to absorb spilled oil and then pressed to remove
the oil and reuse the pad. Absorbent booms (pigs) can be used to reduce
the amount of absorbent material needed for cleanups by initially diking
the spill. Absorbent usage can be significantly reduced by practicing
good housekeeping procedures; e.g. use of drip pans, funnels, detection
and repair of leaks, and pneumatic pumps.
For more information
concerning the proper handling of absorbents, contact the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Solid and Hazardous
Waste (http://www.dep.state.fl.us/waste/categories/shw/default.htm)
or the Florida Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management (http://floridacenter.org).
